Non-explosive concrete silo demolition

A controlled demolition methodology used diamond wire cutting from a safe distance to reduce risk around a tall, heavy concrete silo.

Condensed project story

The height and mass of an existing concrete silo created significant risk for a conventional demolition approach. Solvocore developed a non-traditional methodology through planning and collaboration between the parties involved.

The intervention

Concrete wire cutting was executed from a safe distance, allowing the demolition sequence to be controlled while reducing exposure to the structure and limiting risk to people, equipment and the surrounding area.

What this project demonstrates

  • Method selection based on site-specific risk rather than a default demolition technique.
  • Remote or distanced cutting to reduce exposure.
  • Use of specialist concrete cutting equipment as part of a demolition strategy.
  • Planning around the behaviour of a large structural element as it was progressively released.

Outcome

The project stands as an example of controlled, non-explosive demolition where engineered sequencing and specialist cutting technology were central to execution.
